Aligning Work Performance With Corporate Strategy
As companies run leaner operations with fewer workers, there is a greater demand placed on workers to increase productivity. But increased productivity, as it is defined now, working more hours and getting more tasks completed, doesn't necessarily lead to increased profits. Workers in the United States, for example, put in more hours and take fewer vacation days than most industrialized countries, yet France's workers win on productivity by accomplishing more in a 40 hour work week.
When an employee is “working smarter” it means that he/she is getting the same or better results in less time. Organizations must distinguish the difference between workers that are busy and workers that are productive. Workers are only productive if they spend their time engaging in value-added activities that have an end-output that is line with the organization's strategic objectives. Although spending 2 hours a day reading and replying to email may feel productive, it is a great way to waste time unless the correspondence is somehow generating income or adding value. The same holds true for almost any other activity. In fact, companies will find that most employees spend only 20% of their time on real-output producing activities. The other 80% is spent on activities that add low or no value. To survive in the 21st Century, companies must retrain workers to concentrate on high-output work. Time management is not enough. Workers must see how their work impacts the organization. Survival is dependant on a company's ability to put systems and processes in place that align productivity with the organization's strategic objectives. Companies that fail to do so, will create a workforce that is comprised of busy, yet unproductive workers.
InteliCorp Business Solutions provides the systems, tools and support that will enable your organization to intelligently plan ahead for the increasing demands that will be placed on your workforce in the years to come.
